"The church is like a body – it has one identity, but many parts; all different and yet all dependent upon each other, interconnected and yet intimate."

(To find out more about this, check out: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

And like a body, the church is at it’s healthiest when all parts are doing their job well. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people in order for the church to grow and to thrive in its mission.

Leadership

Overseeing all of this,  God has given the gift of leadership (Romans 12:8). At Bethel we prayerfully seek to appoint Elders and Deacons to recognise this important and precious calling. Part of this role means to oversee, support and encourage the work of the five Mission and Ministry Teams. Please do pray for them in this – thank God for them, for their willingness to serve in this way and the time and love they pour into the work of the Kingdom through the church!

Rosie Roberts - Church Secretary and Elder   Steve Pettit - Church Treasurer
I have been a member of Bethel for over 20 years, after moving to Whitchurch and starting a family we were looking for a local church and from our first visit we were made to feel welcome. The warmth and care of the Church family living out the call to love one another is something that I feel is an essential part of the mission and ministry of the Church and over the years I have had the privilege of helping to support this work as a small group leader, deacon. and elder. I am married to Aled and our 2 sons are now in their 20's. Both Aled and I work as nurses specialising in cancer care and in our time off you are most likely to find us in the hills,  either including hillwalking or ski-ing.    Stephen, along with the finance team, is responsible for the church finances. He has been a member of Bethel for 20 years and is also a member of the music group as well as leading the online Small Group. Originally from Essex (!) Stephen has lived in Cardiff since arriving as a student in 1986, subsequently working in Cardiff University but now retired. He is married to Bec and has two sons. He enjoys cycling (mostly indoors), running and creative activities and has a long wish list of things to do in the next few years.

Richard H   Rob Vernon
Richard Hodges - Elder   Rob Vernon (Elder)

Though a Yorkshireman by birth, I was raised in Lower Cwmtwrch and moved to Cardiff when I married Sarah and we are now parents to the wonderful Hannah. I often teach youth on Sunday mornings  and help out as a lay preacher for a small number of  nearby churches. I hold to the five solas because, frankly, I’m the worst sinner I’ve ever met, thankful that though my sin is great, my Saviour is greater and it’s only by Jesus dying for me do I stand justified and righteous before God.

Rob has always attended baptist churches and was baptised at his then home church in the Midlands in 2001.  Since moving to and settling in Cardiff, Rob and his wife Lorraine found their church home at Bethel and have now been attending (more recently with their daughters) for over 20 years.  Rob has found that it is a great blessing to be part of the leadership team.  Outside of work and church Rob enjoys playing and watching sport, playing drums and has recently developed an interest in (some) classical music!

Andy Gibbs   Cathy Stroemer Headshot
Andy Gibbs-Elder   Cathy Stroemer-Deacon

Andy’s faith journey began in the late 80’s when he met his future wife at a birthday party (although they didn’t know it at the time).  This led to his first meaningful encounter with church and his first encounter with Christ.  Since then, he’s been involved in most aspects of church life and is passionate about how the Christian faith connects with life to make a difference in the world around us.  He works for the NHS as a hospital Chaplain and supports various churches across South Wales.  This includes supporting leadership teams, preaching and pastoral care with the aim of seeing churches grow as disciples.  To relax Andy enjoys computer gaming, swimming and body boarding when he gets the chance!  He’s an ordained Baptist Minister and married to Jan with three grown up children.

I was baptised at University Baptist Church in Champaign, Illinois where I met my husband Paul.
We’ve lived in the UK since 1994 – first in Manchester, then South East London before settling in North Cardiff.  I work full time as a civil servant and have been learning Welsh since I moved to Cardiff.

I have been part of the Wonderful Bethel church in Whitchurch for over 25 years, live in Pontyclun but cannot stay away from this gift of God. My 4 daughters have left home but have my wife Jan to keep me in order and a cat who is great. I am generally seen helping with the primary school kids club and help with the Free food market at Bethel and but also will be seen 1st in the Q for tea after some serious worship. I still am Church link to Tearfund. I have worked in the nhs as a nurse for 36 years so winding down a bit by clearing green spaces in Whitchurch and Pontyclun, helping in a church cafe, walking with Jan as long as there is coffee and toast after and swim. God has led me fervently and knowingly for the last 2 years in supporting Bethel  any way I can, Holy Spirit, feed me

My wife and I joined Bethel when we moved from Lancaster to Cardiff in 2005. For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about Jesus, mathematics and baseball. We have two daughters who, happily, also love God, fractals, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

I have been a member of Bethel since moving to Llandaff North with my wife Sue in 1997. We have two grown-up children - Sam and Megan.
Things that make me happy include trains, Dutch bicycles, comic songs, old computers, and finding out about followers of Jesus who are making the world a better place.
My ideal weekend would involve taking a good long walk with friends, exploring a cave, eating a curry and enjoying some live music.
Stuart is a father of two teenage children and is married to Jo.  He is a lawyer and enjoys his motorbiking.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Hello

Where and When

The church is open for activities throughout the week but if you are just seeking us out it is likely that you will want to come and be a part of our Sunday worship which is core to what we are about.
We meet in the main church building (details here) at 10:30 each week. See our calendar to find out plans for the next few weeks.

Accessibility

There is wheelchair access and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets in the main foyer and church lounge.

Our Sunday Services

Sunday morning services are structured but informal. They include a mix of both contemporary and traditional worship songs and hymns, prayers, readings from the Bible and a sermon that unpacks this. Occasionally we will also have specific updates about ways that God has been working through and in people and activities. Once a month we celebrate communion as part of the service. The last Sunday of the month is usually an Altogether Service when all ages are all together in one place for a more relaxed and activity based time of worship.

We aim to finish at about 11.45 to Midday when we serve free tea, coffee and cold drinks. This is a great opportunity to get to meet people.

Sunday Evening services, either in person or online, tend to be shorter and more reflective and are an opportunity to dig a little deeper into our relationship with God.

What about the children and youth?

We have a great programme for children of all ages, for more information about what happens please visit our Children and Youth page.

Getting Connected

Small Groups

It is often in smaller gatherings that we can really get to know other people. Being part of one of our small groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some in the afternoon and some in the evening either in the church, in peoples’ homes or online    .
If you are interested in joining a Small Group, let us know and we can put you in touch with the small group coordinator who will be more than happy to find a group that is convenient for you and introduce you to the group leader.

Get Involved

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the life of our church. If you'd like to find out more, please let us know.
